Brookside Country Club
Brookside Country Club is a classic Donald Ross design located in Canton, Ohio that is by all means a championship golf course worthy of a USGA event. It is ranked #64 in Golf Magazine’s Top 100 Best Classic Courses Rankings and has been climbing the ranks ever since 2003 when the course underwent a major renovation to restore Donald Ross’ original design and vision.
The renovation was done by Brian Silva and his team which consisted of restoring the original sizes and shapes of the green complexes, reshaping of the fairways to return them to their original “S” shape, a major tree program which opened up much of the back nine, bunker restoration and renovation, as well as the addition of 15 new tee boxes. After all was said and done, the course made a dramatic transformation that brought alive Donald Ross’ original visions.
The course played plenty difficult as the par-4’s are challenging both off of the tee and around the greens. Failure to be in position off of the tee can make it nearly impossible to get the ball in position around the greens, which is imperative. The major key to success is to keep the ball below the hole throughout the round. The par-3’s are very challenging due elevation changes and well protected greens. Up and downs are hard to come by and 2-putts have to earned and not taken for granted. All in all, you can get away with a few arrant tee shots but have to be strategic and precise on both approaches and more importantly around the greens. Bump and runs and a variety of imaginative shots are be of great value throughout the round.
The clubhouse sits at the highest point on the property making for great views, especially of the back nine and the eighteenth hole. The entire experience was first class. In my mind, Brookside deserves a top 50 ranking but it is looking like its on its way up. Their membership and Brian Silva should be recognized for their tremendous effort in restoring this Golden Age gem, showcasing one of Donald Ross’ finest.
